Mosaic planning guide

Plan mosaic sheets, pattern and grout together

Add a stunning focal point to any room with our premium selection of mosaic tiles, all at incredible discount prices. Perfect for creating eye-catching kitchen backsplashes, shower accents, or unique feature walls, our mosaics let you express your personal style for less. Mosaic tile is assembled from smaller pieces, often on sheets. The size of each piece, spacing within the sheet and alignment between sheets all affect the finished pattern.

Start with the intended surface and verify the exact product’s approved use.

Choose your store

Use the header selector for Marietta or Norcross. Check the exact product’s store quantity before you travel.

Check the selling unit

Compare the item, box or piece price and what is included. For flooring, also check coverage per box.

Plan in-store pickup

Confirm condition, quantity and pickup with the team. Purchases are completed in store; arrange your own transport.

Calculate from sheet coverage

Use the listed sheet coverage and selling unit to estimate quantity. Nominal sheet dimensions may include an irregular outline or pattern, so multiplying width by length can overstate coverage. Divide the measured surface area by the product’s stated coverage, then round to whole sheets or cartons as sold. Agree an allowance for cuts, pattern alignment and spare material with the installer.

Build a sample layout

Arrange several sheets in a sample layout before installation. Check that joints at sheet boundaries blend with the joints inside each sheet and that the pattern continues at corners, niches and outlets. Compare stone variation, glass reflection or metal accents in the room’s lighting. Mesh backing describes how pieces are held together; it does not by itself establish approval for a shower, floor or exterior surface.

Match setting and grout products

Choose mortar, grout and cleaning products for the exact mosaic materials and the intended location. Polished stone and some glass or glazed surfaces can be scratched or stained by unsuitable grout. Review the tile and grout instructions and test the combination on separate sample pieces. Wet areas require the appropriate installation and waterproofing system beneath the finish.

Frequently asked questions

Is a nominal 14-by-14-inch sheet always 1.36 square feet?

No. Use the stated coverage for that product. Pattern shape and the actual sheet dimensions can produce a different usable coverage.

Can every mosaic be installed on a shower floor?

No. Verify the exact product’s approval, installation requirements and intended use. A mosaic pattern or mesh backing does not establish that approval.
