Wood: grain, construction and finish
Solid hardwood and engineered wood both bring a real-wood surface to a room, but their construction and installation options differ. Compare the species, plank dimensions, surface finish and manufacturer’s room-level and moisture requirements. Refinishing potential depends on the product and remaining wear surface; it should not be assumed for every wood floor.
Vinyl: format, core and wear surface
Look beyond the printed wood or stone design. Compare the floor’s overall thickness, wear-layer specification, attachment system and any integrated backing. Follow the exact product’s guidance for subfloor preparation, temperature and moisture conditions. A waterproof claim does not make every installation detail waterproof or replace required protection elsewhere in the room.
Tile: surface approval and installation
Compare porcelain and ceramic tile by approved application, dimensions, texture and maintenance needs. Floor use, wet-area use and exterior use each need a product-specific check. Include substrate preparation, appropriate mortar, grout, edge details and movement accommodation in the plan. Tile intended only for walls is not a substitute for floor-rated tile.
Stone: natural variation and care
Marble, travertine and other natural stone can vary in tone, veining and surface texture from piece to piece. Compare a representative selection and review the exact finish’s sealing and cleaning guidance. Confirm floor-use suitability and installation requirements with your installer. Stone-look porcelain is a different material and should be compared on its own specifications.

Break an irregular room into measurable sections and total the area. Ask your installer how the layout, cuts, matching and spare pieces affect the material allowance. Divide the resulting requirement by the product’s verified coverage per selling unit, then round up. Check the listing carefully: a box price, piece price and per-square-foot price are not interchangeable.
Include preparation and finishing materials
The visible floor is only part of the order. Depending on the product and installation system, you may need substrate preparation, adhesive, underlayment, transitions, base trim or stair components. An attached pad does not automatically allow another underlayment beneath it. Have your installer confirm compatible accessories and the height where the new floor meets existing surfaces.

How do I choose between wood, vinyl, tile and stone?
Start with the room’s moisture conditions, traffic, subfloor and the appearance you want. Compare product-specific installation and care guidance, then look at the full project cost, including preparation and finishing materials. Use physical samples to narrow the design choices.
Is waterproof flooring suitable for every room?
No. Waterproof and water-resistant claims are product-specific and have installation and warranty conditions. The floor must still be approved for the room and assembly. Such a claim does not replace shower waterproofing, correct drainage or other required building protection.
How much extra flooring should I order?
There is no single allowance that fits every project. Room shape, plank or tile dimensions, pattern, matching and spare-material needs all matter. Ask your installer to confirm an allowance, then use the verified carton or piece coverage to calculate whole selling units.
Can new flooring go over my existing floor?
That depends on the new product, existing surface and installation system. The substrate must meet the manufacturer’s requirements for condition, flatness, moisture and stability. Have a qualified installer assess the existing assembly before choosing a method.
Does every floor need underlayment?
No. Requirements vary by material and installation system. Some floors include an attached backing, while others call for specific underlayment or adhesives. Follow the exact manufacturer instructions; adding an unapproved layer can affect the installation.
