Room plan, tape measure and material samples on an oak table

A little planning goes a long way

Start with a better project plan.

Practical steps for measuring, comparing products, and preparing your renovation shopping list.

Choose a planning topic

Apply your plan to a room

Measure before you shop

Sketch each room and record its length and width. Measure separate areas individually, then note doorways, stairs, transitions, and fixed fixtures. For vanities and appliances, include clearance, plumbing, and connection locations.

Use the product's actual coverage

Flooring may be sold by box, piece, or another unit. Check the product page for pack coverage and use that figure when estimating your order. Ask your installer how layout, cuts, and matching requirements affect the amount needed; one allowance does not fit every project.

Keep product care instructions

Read the manufacturer’s cleaning and maintenance instructions for the exact material and finish. Keep those instructions with your purchase details and ask about compatible care products before use.

Prepare for the next step

Bring your dimensions, product links, and questions when you contact AHL. Verify inventory at the intended store and discuss pickup arrangements before booking labor. Keep product labels and installation instructions with your project records.
