What to check before buying an open-box appliance
Make your decision using the exact appliance you will take home. A model’s specifications describe the design; the individual unit’s condition and included parts still need to be checked.
1. Measure the opening and the route into your home
Record the available width, height and depth, and compare them with the exact model’s installation instructions. Allow for doors, drawers, handles and the clearances required by the manufacturer.
Measure doorways, hallways and tight turns along the route. Ask about packaged dimensions and weight as well as the appliance dimensions. An appliance that fits the cabinet opening may still be difficult to move through a narrow entrance.
2. Confirm the model and individual condition
Save the product link and SKU, and compare the model number with the unit and its documentation. Ask the store to identify the condition of the particular appliance: packaging, visible marks, dents, missing pieces and any known limitations.
Ask what inspection or testing has actually been performed. Do not assume that an appliance has been tested, repaired or certified unless the team can confirm it for that unit. Inspect the accessible surfaces before completing your purchase.
3. Check included parts and connection requirements
Ask which shelves, racks, trays, handles, mounting parts, hoses, cords or other accessories are included. The contents can vary by model and individual unit. Make a separate list of anything you still need.
Review electrical, gas, water, drain and ventilation requirements in the manufacturer’s installation instructions with a qualified installer. AHL product sales and pickup do not include installation; do not choose an appliance based on an assumed connection match.
4. Review warranty and returns for this item
Read AHL’s current appliance warranty and return policy, then ask how it applies to the exact appliance and condition you are buying. Confirm any manufacturer coverage directly rather than assuming a standard new-product warranty applies.
Keep the receipt, model information, applicable written terms and installation instructions. Resolve questions about missing parts, cosmetic condition and return eligibility before purchasing.
5. Arrange pickup before making the trip
Choose your store in the website header and call with the model or SKU to confirm availability. Ask about pickup timing, package dimensions, weight and collection arrangements.
Arrange suitable transport and follow the manufacturer’s handling guidance. Confirm how you will get the appliance into your home and who will install it before booking labor. Purchases are completed in store; AHL does not ship these products.
